The 10 best Wii U games under $20
Gaming is much cheaper than it used to be, with games deprecating in price even after a few months on the shelves.
Whilst Nintendo games traditionally take a while longer to decrease in value, this still does ring true for the Big N’s games to an extent. With the Wii U in its twilight, there are some real gems on the console that can be picked up for cheap.
So following our respective features for the Xbox One and the PS4 here’s an equivalent list for those of you who may have recently purchased a Wii U and are looking to delve into its treasures, or perhaps you’ve had a Wii U for a while and want to squeeze every last bit of game time out of it before the Switch hits in March.
If so, here are the best Wii U games available for under $20:
10: Super Mario 3D World
Mario’s only true 3D appearance on the Wii U, Super Mario 3D World represents the best multiplayer Mario platformer to date. Up to 4 players can enjoy exploring the beautiful worlds with the expertly-honed 3D controls we’ve become used to over the years. It’s amazing fun, and it’s up there with the best looking games on the console.
Mario’s 3D adventure is available here from Amazon.
9: Lego City Undercover
Frankly, the best Lego game. It’s an open-world, almost GTA-style adventure, and really isn’t to be missed if you enjoy the Lego games’ charm and sandbox-type games. It’s getting a port to PS4 and Xbox One soon, and there’s a good reason for that.

Nintendoland may not have caused the same seismic waves as the original Wii’s bundle-title Wii Sports, but those who played it know it’s a real gem. A set of various multiplayer titles based on each of Nintendo’s core franchises, it’s still the best example of a game that makes the best of the tablet controller.
7: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Considered by many to be the best game in the series, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is a punishing but rewarding game, and probably the deepest game on the system if you can stick with it. It’s more accessible than most of the other games in the series too, so curious newcomers should give it a go.
6: The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD
An HD remake to possibly my favourite game of all time, Wind Waker HD is simply a must-own for any Wii U owner.
A huge, beautiful adventure across the open sea, it’s honestly better than any Zelda game that’s come since.
5: Darksiders: Warmastered Edition
If you’ve played Zelda and fancy something a little ‘darker’, then Darksiders is most certainly the game for you.
It was severely underrated upon release, as it offers a sprawling world, great characters, and great technical features in an adventure game I’d highly recommend.
It’s just available here from Amazon.
I’ve actually put more hours into ZombiU than any other Wii U game in my collection.
It was somewhat under-appreciated when it was released, but the perma-death system and excellent gameplay make for a truly unique and unforgettable gaming experience once things click.

3: Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Another hugely under-appreciated gem, it’s simply very difficult to criticise Deus Ex HR. A long, engrossing and deep adventure, with so much customisation. It achieves the sense that your decisions making a difference better than any game I’ve played.
2: Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze
Retro studios have done great things with the Donkey Kong franchise since they took over from Rare, and Tropical Freeze represents their best effort.
It’s a beautiful and hugely challenging platformer, offering something for newcomers and veterans of the series.
If you’re after a challenge, it’s available from Amazon here.
1: Mass Effect 3
The best bargain on the list, the third game in the Mass Effect series didn’t release with too much fanfare on the Wii U when it launched, but it’s the best version of the game in existence.
A massive adventure and definitely not to be missed if it hasn’t been played.
