The 10 best PS3 games under $10
I was personally fairly late to the party with the PS3, only picking one up in 2013. I remember at the time truly appreciating the value of coming to a console late in its life, being a ‘patient gamer’ as the saying goes.
I instantly had access to a huge library of quality titles, and I remember wishing I had a nice breakdown of the best titles I should go for, which I could get on the cheap.
So following our respective features for the Xbox 360, Xbox One and PS4, here’s an equivalent list for those of you who might have just purchased a PS3 and are looking to grab some great games at super-low prices, or maybe you’ve had one for a while and fancy dusting it off to play some gems you missed over the years.
If so, here are the best PS3 games available for under $10:
10: Skyrim Legendary Edition
Skyrim is a game that doesn’t really need any introduction, being one of the best-selling and most critically acclaimed games of the last generation. If you haven’t played Bethesda’s epic open-world fantasy yet, this is the best time to do so value-wise ever.
9: Mass Effect 2
The best of the Mass effect series and simply one of the best adventure RPGs ever made. Bioware’s magnum opus is a wonderfully playable and engrossing space opera and highly recommended for any sci-fi fans.
8: Deus Ex Human Revolution: Director’s Cut
A hugely under-appreciated gem of a game, it’s simply very difficult to criticise Deus Ex HR. A long, engrossing and deep adventure, with so much customisation. It achieves the sense that your decisions making a difference better than any game I’ve played.
7: Grand Theft Auto 4
A massive game and in many ways superior to GTAV, the 4th main game features a wonderful living, breathing New York City, excellent characters and the best story and vehicle handling in the franchise. It’s a game you can sink hours into.
One of the few games I’ve played without knowing anything about it, I was delighted with what I found with Starhawk. A hugely varied multiplayer shooter, it blends on-foot and vehicular combat in the most successful way since Battlefront 2.
5: Wipeout HD
My favourite game for the PS3, and it’s a downloadable. Everything is great about WipeOut HD, from the depth and feel of the handling of the ships, to the super slick graphics and stellar soundtrack. I regularly listen to the music to this game when I’m out and about – if you do nothing else, check it out on Spotify and you won’t be disappointed. But I’d highly recommend trying this game.
It’s just $4.37 from the PS Store.
4: Killzone 3
Another extremely underrated game and easily the best in the Killzone series, far better than the ill-advised PS4 launch title Killzone Shadowfall. Killzone 3 has tight gunplay and looks absolutely stunning, being easily one of the best looking games on the machine. Highly recommended if you’ve ever enjoyed a first person shooter.
3: God of War Origins Collection
God of War 1 is solid but God of War 2 is really what makes this bundle shine. The gruesome gameplay is fluid and a joy to handle, and whilst it may be an upscaled PS2 game the graphics are much better than a lot of the made-for-PS3 games I’ve played. Essential consumption for any fan of third person action games.
2: Metal Gear Solid 4
When MGS4 landed it was probably the best looking console game ever made, and it’s definitely still top-10 of its generation. The production values are so high in this game, with the graphics, sound, cinematics, variety and depth of gameplay all shining through in a fantastic action experience.
If you’re after a challenge, it’s available here from Amazon.
1: Borderlands 2
My favourite shooter on the PS3 and certainly the best 2-player co-op experience available. Borderlands 2 is a sprawling adventure through an apocalyptic open-world, with tight gunplay and addictive loot-reward mechanics. Much better than many of the games that have tried to emulate its system since.
